Why You May Want to Stop Using Your Philips CPAP Machine

Philips Respironics has recalled Philips sleep apnea devices called continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines because of an increased risk of users developing serious side effects. The recall resulted from concerns that their foam liners inside could disintegrate and break down, possibly causing leaving users potentially inhaling toxic chemicals or contaminants. Users who have suffered side effects after using the machine may be entitled to compensation by filing a Philips CPAP lawsuit.

How Does a CPAP Machine Work?

A CPAP machine from Philips is prescribed to people with sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea or OSA can lead to breathing interruptions or pauses when a person sleeps, often due to their throat or airways collapsing and blocking the way. The device offers steady oxygen flow into the nose and mouth of the user when they sleep, therefore keeping their airways open and ensuring they breathe normally.

In June 2021, the FDA issued a recall to some Philips CPAP, BiPAP, and ventilator machines. It asserts that those who use certain machines from the manufacturer could face possible health risks. The issue revolves around the machine’s component, which is a polyester-based polyurethane sound abatement foam inside it meant for minimizing sound and vibration. According to the FDA, this foam may degrade over time and possibly enter the air pathway of the device, getting inhaled by users. Possible risks of using the machine include headaches, inflammatory response, skin and eye irritation, asthma, organ failure, as well as carcinogenic effects including cancer. Also, the degraded foam can release volatile organic compounds that can lead to issues such as hypersensitivity, nausea and vomiting, headaches, dizziness, and other issues.

Why Victims Should Hire a Lawyer

Lawyers who have extensive experience in defending affected users of Philips CPAP machines will work hard to achieve the best results for their clients. They can help victims secure significant settlements or jury verdicts for them. Their extensive experience in handling complex product liability claims allows them to stand against the manufacturer’s aggressive insurance company and legal team. The attorney employs people who can help identify and gather significant evidence to help prove liability and ensure the client has a strong case.

A great CPAP lawsuit attorney will often take a case on a contingency fee basis. Thus, victims won’t need to worry about paying legal fees until after their attorney recovers the compensation they deserve to receive. Victims should not wait because the longer they wait the more difficult it can be to prove liability and recover their desired compensation.
